Kates Yoga Lineage

Kate is the owner and founder of Greenstone Retreat and has been teaching yoga since 2019. With a history in personal training, sports therapy, massage and hospitality Kates love of wellness and holistic living is helping to shape Greenstone Retreat into becoming “THE West Coast Holistic Healing Retreat” with a wonderful team of therapists, helpers and supporters.

Kates yoga lineage connects to some prominent figures in modern yoga. Here’s a brief overview of this lineage:

Swami Sivananda (1887–1963): A highly influential spiritual leader and yoga master from India, Swami Sivananda promoted the integration of physical, mental, and spiritual practices. He founded the Divine Life Society in 1936, emphasizing yoga, meditation, and a spiritual path of selfless service, devotion, and knowledge. His teachings continue to influence modern yoga practices worldwide.

Swami Vishnudevananda (1927–1993): One of Swami Sivananda’s direct disciples, Swami Vishnudevananda played a crucial role in spreading Sivananda yoga to the West. He founded the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres and focused on teaching the Five Points of Yoga (proper exercise, breathing, relaxation, diet, and meditation) and the Four Paths of Yoga (Karma, Bhakti, Raja, and Jnana).

Swami Devananda: As a disciple of Swami Sivananda, he would have been trained in this strong tradition of yoga, incorporating both the physical aspects (asana and pranayama) and spiritual practices (meditation and selfless service).

Kamala Devi: Kamala Devi learned under Swami Devananda, preserving the rich teachings passed down from Swami Sivananda’s lineage.

Carrie Anne Fields: Carrie Anne Fields, founder of My Health Yoga, has continued to embody these teachings while making them accessible and relevant to a modern audience.

Kates lineage represents a strong connection to classical Hatha yoga, with deep roots in traditional spiritual practices. It emphasizes a holistic approach, blending physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. This combined with research into Paganism, Shamanism and other life schools has created a unique way of sharing yoga. Kate is currently completing her Level 2 teacher training with My Health Yoga to add to the level 1 completed in 2019. In 2020 Kate completed Yin yoga training with Kassandra and Reiki Level 1 was completed in 2023 with Claire of Light Academy nz.

If you are keen to try it out, group classes are currently Monday nights 7.30pm for a gentle Hatha style and Saturday mornings 8.30am for Yin Yoga. All sessions include a sound healing with crystal and Tibetan bowls along with other instruments to aid the relaxation and healing process. Private classes and groups available upon request.

Namaste.
